Goodbye Yankee Stadium!

New York 8/1/2008 - 8/3/2008

Myself, Brandon, Welches and Norm took a trip to New York to see Yankee Stadium one last time. Yankee Stadium is arguably the most historic stadium in all of sports. The most championships won in all of sports and the most historic names in baseball played there. Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Yogi Berra and so many others. We were lucky enought to score tickets during the old timers last game. This was the last time the living Yankee greats would be on the field. Such a cool experience to see them on the field again.

We took the redeye out on Thursday and arrived at 6:00 AM Friday morning. None of got any sleep and we couldn't get into our room until 4:00 so we got breakfast and picked up some drinks at Whole Foods.
So I'm in line at Whole Foods near Central Park with Brandon and who walks behind us in line? SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY, one of the biggest rockstars of all time!!!! I nudge Brandon and we look at each other in total disbelief. I ask Paul if I could have a picture with him and he responds with a "Not with my family around and I don't want to draw a crowd"...I respond, "I totally respect that." He puts his hand on both mine and Brandon's shoulder/back and leans in and says "I appreciate it guys....cheers." So we pay for our drinks and I run outside and tell the other guys...they get a look as he walks out with his daughter in a stroller and he waives to me and Brandon and says "See Ya!" and walks into the distance. I did a full fist pump on my knees because Paul McCartney just acknowledged me voluntarily! In front of 4 other witnesses! So surreal.
Anyways, so we go to Central Park and take a nap since were all delerious from no sleep. I obvously fall asleep with a huge grin on my face.

After a 45 minute power nap and hydrating ourselves, we were all ready to go. We just started walking the streets of NY. This is Time Square during the day.

We all agreed to walk through the Modern Museum of Art (MOMA). All the big named artists were on display - Monet, Picasso, VanGogh...so many others...

We ate at Peter Lugar Steakhouse in Brooklyn on Friday night. We booked 2 months in advance because it fills up quickly. We heard it has the best steakhouse in the world from the Travel Channel and it was by far the best steak I've ever had. You ask how can a steak by better than another? You just have to try it. My explanation wouldn't be able to do it justice.

We also went to McSorely's Old Ale House and had a blast. It was packed from wall to wall. We squeezed our way in and ordered a round. They only serve 2 beers...a light and a dark..Little did we know that 1 beer equals 2 and we found out the fun way. We ordered 8 beers so we could all double fist to get our night started and they brought us 16 beers!!!

All together it was a great weekend trip. Being able to tell my kids and grandkids that I've been to Yankee Stadium and was there the last time all the living greats were on the field is priceless. We all made a pact to see a new stadium every year. Looking forward to the next ballpark...
